Information about SCAN-B

SCAN-B (Sweden Cancerome Analysis Network – Breast) is a research project that began in 2010 in the southern healthcare region of Sweden, centered in Lund.
In addition to the Skåne University Hospital in Lund and Malmö, participating hospitals include Helsingborg Hospital, Central Hospital Kristianstad, Blekinge Hospital, Central Hospital Växjö, Halland Hospital Halmstad, Ryhov County Hospital in Jönköping, Uppsala , and Södra Älvsborg Hospital in Borås.

Within the SCAN-B project, tumor tissue, blood samples, and data from the national breast cancer quality registry are collected from a large number of breast cancer cases. The goal is to link biological characteristics of the tumor tissue to prognosis and treatment outcomes over time. Since its start, the project has recruited more than 17,000 patients. Patients from southern Sweden, Jönköping, Borås, and Uppsala have contributed to the research in connection with their breast cancer diagnosis.

Practically, the project works by sending a small piece of tumor tissue to the SCAN-B laboratory in Lund, where the genetic material is analyzed. In addition, blood samples are collected at diagnosis and again after 6, 12, and 36 months.
